Books and beer

Singapore’s first traveling book swap with an icy-cold twist!

Melissa and Eileen met while campaigning for climate action in Copenhagen during the 2009 UN Climate Conference as part of a 12-member youth delegation from Singapore. They’re refined the idea of a book swop to incorporate all that book lovers should enjoy: the exchange and passing on of books they love and authors they enjoy – or well, don’t wish to have on their bookshelves any longer; the sharing of mystic and wonder and intellectualism – with the like-minded and the awed; and the coming together of an eclectic mix – the eccentric and the electric and whoever you may be.

It started with a simple thought – We see tons of carton boxes in every housing estate disposed by residents making online purchases. The wastage from these carton boxes were overwhelming. There had to be a way to reuse these items that were in pristine condition.

Branching from that thought, Little Green Circle Pte. Ltd. was born. Our company name, Little Green Circle, represents the ever-giving cycle of passing on a preowned item that you no longer need to someone else who has a use for it. Thereby, bringing continuity to an item.

Thryft

Thryft is a second-hand online bookstore where you can trade in old books for credits to purchase other books on its marketplace.

At Thryft, we believe in creating a sustainable reading culture by extending the shelf life of each book. Instead of piling up more titles at home, we give second-hand books new lives to be loved and read again.

The Food Bank Singapore

The Food Bank Singapore was set up by Nichol and Nicholas Ng, a pair of siblings running a food distribution business, FoodXervices Inc. Pte. Ltd. After observing the food industry for more than a decade, they realized the need for a food bank in Singapore.

Founded in January 2012, The Food Bank Singapore visited more than 30 charity organizations and homes to gain better insight into the situation on the ground. We also took the time to understand the operating models of each organization that provides free meals and dry rations to the needy and less fortunate families and individuals.

So far, Uplift has sent over 1.5 million bras to 11 Asia Pacific countries, Botswana, Uganda, India and Pakistan.

For women in disadvantaged communities, a bra is often unobtainable or unaffordable. This project collects new and second hand bras and sends them wherever we have requests.
