In search of a helper? You aren’t alone as about one in five Singaporean households hire maids, a spike of 27 per cent in less than a decade. With almost 300.000 helpers residing in Singapore, one is bound to get curious – where are they from?
Owing to its proximity to Singapore, they are predominantly from neighbouring Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar. In fact. According to a report done by local NGO Transient Workers Count Too, 50% of helpers hail from Indonesia, 30% from the Philippines and 15% from Myanmar. The small 5% hail from the following countries: Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Macau, Malaysia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand. But, why do they travel all the way to Singapore?
There is an ever-growing demand for domestic helpers in Singapore with the trend of double-income households, even during the pandemic. Domestic helpers are saviours to families in Singapore as they normally struggle in juggling between their work and home responsibilities.
Travelling all the way from home must be hard so let’s use Helper Appreciation Month each May to show gratitude to our helping hands!
