ART STAGE, the flagship art show of Southeast Asia, kicks off the international art season every January with the very best of Asian contemporary art.

ART STAGE is the flagship show of the Southeast Asian art world and the region’s key voice in representing the interests of Asian art in the global arena. Through its insights on the regional art landscape, the Fair acts as a catalyst for driving international interest in and understanding of Southeast Asian art and igniting heightened market activity. ART STAGE also plays a pivotal role in developing and bridging various segmented art markets in the region. At the crossroads of Southeast Asia and the world, ART STAGE creates a singular and unified Southeast Asian market, positioned to be more competitive with the more developed global art markets in the West and China.

Galleries

Presenting handpicked galleries from Asian and Western countries that complement each other, ART STAGE Singapore promotes dialogue not only between Asia and the West but also amongst the countries of the Asian region as well. ART STAGE Singapore’s consistent support of Asian galleries, artists and art practices positions the Fair as the region’s international voice, representing the interests of Asian contemporary art in the global arena.

With its strong Asian identity and its support of art scenes in the region, ART STAGE Singapore cooperates with Asian galleries, artists and collectors to create a distinctive partnership and networking platform.  ART STAGE Singapore features a three to one ratio of Asian to western galleries. Asia is often perceived as a seamless and interconnected region. The fact is, however, that the art scenes of Asia remain fragmented and disconnected from one another. ART STAGE Singapore is bridging this divide with the introduction of an innovative new format that allows for a diverse, considered and comprehensive presentation of the best contemporary art from Asia.

“Taking inspiration from the intricate patterns found within Eden Hall, the natural landscape of Singapore and the wilds of my imagination, my work reflects on how we inhabit space through visual identity. I am interested in the imprecision of memory and the process by which imagination can intrude on physical space, influencing how people establish a connection to it. “ - Chloë Manasseh

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words by INSTINC Art Space

When we encounter a painting, a silkscreen print, a drawing or an installation, we often jump straight to examine the work using qualities that would hopefully aid us to interpret and therefore understand the message that piece of art embodies. These qualities are classified into Form and Content. Little do we ponder on how an artwork was created or spend time to wonder about the actions and events that took place for these attitudes to become forms.

This panel discussion aims to unravel and tease out the making processes that had taken place behind these alluring surfaces. Is there an unconscious sense of aesthetics amongst these artists? Do their works speak the same language? How might the process of working together informed their individual practices and vice versa? What is more to this than meets the eye?

Speakers:
Jennifer K.Y. Lam, Laudi Abilama, Chihiro Kabata, Yurri Kabata and Yeo Shih Yun

About the president

Lorenzo Rudolf began his career in the art world when he was appointed Director of Art Basel in January 1991.

He created a new art fair concept which transformed Art Basel from a classical trade show to the flagship event of the international art world.

It was the first time that an art event,

  • built its brand as the quality label of the art market worldwide,
  • developed a strategic partnership with a top tier financial institution (UBS) and created a new model of co-operation based on mutual support, and
  • recognized the art collector and (potential) wealthy art buyer as a crucial client and introduced an extended VIP programme.

During his time at the helm of Art Basel, it became the most important event in the global art scene as well as a unique, international social and lifestyle platform. As the next strategic step, he created and launched Art Basel Miami Beach – the fair’s successful expansion into the increasingly dominant American market.

In 2000, after a successful decade helming Art Basel, the highly esteemed Frankfurt Book Fair appointed Lorenzo Rudolf as its new Director. After three years in the communications and publishing industry, he returned to the art world.

In 2007, Lorenzo co-founded and directed the first international contemporary art fair in Asia, ShContemporary in Shanghai, China. Understanding that Asia deserves a stronger platform in the international art arena, Lorenzo created Art Stage Singapore in 2010 and the fair has since grown from strength to strength.

Art Stage Singapore has carved its own Asian identity as an international fair with a focus on contemporary Asian art.
