What is Yin Yoga?
It is a style of yoga that is nurturing, inward, quietening, calming, cooling, rebalancing, deep, and yet, is not restorative yoga.
It has long holds (often 5+ minutes), often supported by the floor, wall or props, where muscles are intentionally soft and we stimulate the connective tissue of the body – the tendons, ligaments and fascia. It is understood that the energetic meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine follow paths through this connective tissue and can be stimulated and cleared of blockages.
We seek an “EDGE” in a yin pose – where we find a mental focal point within the pose – a sensation of tension/ compression/ shear/ twist within the pose.
Furthermore, the five minutes of yin posture holds give us opportunities to concurrently practice some of the deeper yogic practices of breath awareness, pranayama, mindfulness, meditation, sense withdrawal, concentration, chanting, visualization….
