Can I hire a part-time helper?

If you are looking for an extra pair of hands around the house, having a part-time helper can be a blessing. Hiring a part-time helper is a good alternative to live-in maids when you prefer to have more flexibility.

Still, there are some important details that you have to pay attention to when hiring one.

Is it legal to hire a part-time helper?

Can I hire a part-time helper maid in Singapore Is it legal

According to the Ministry of Manpower, a foreign domestic worker’s deployment must comply with Work Permit conditions, which states that she cannot take on any part-time work. In short, you can only hire a part-time helper if she is a permanent resident, citizen, or holder of a dependent pass in Singapore.

Where can I hire a part-time maid?

You can hire a helper either through a part-time maid agency or independent home cleaners. Agencies typically charge a higher price but their services tend to be more reliable. If the cleaner is unable to show up for the time you booked, the agency will assign another person to do the job. If you are not satisfied with the service provided, you can request the agency for a change of cleaner.

The quality of independent helpers can vary a lot, so the best way is to ask your friends and family for referrals. You can also get in touch with independent part-time helpers through online platforms. Before you hire a helper, make sure she is not a foreign domestic worker and has legal rights to work as a part-time helper in Singapore.

 How much does it cost?

Fees are usually charged on an hourly basis or by blocks of 3 to 4 hours. A part-time maid typically charges between $18-$30 per hour. Depending on the size of your house and workload, you can decide how many hours of service you need. However, it is also common for part-time helpers to require a minimum number of hours per visit. If you are expecting to use the maid’s service regularly, you can ask if the worker or her agency provides any discounted packages.
