The Malaysian Film Festival celebrates the very best of Malaysian cinema here in Singapore at the Old Parliament House (the Arts House) for 3 days from 28th September to 30th September 2018 and will run in conjunction with the CausewayEXchange festival. We have the honor once again to have veteran Malaysian filmmaker, Mr Hassan Muthalib, who has been an integral part of the Malaysian film industry for the last 50 years, to curate this year’s lineup.
The festival will also feature panel discussions and talks by the directors of some of the featured films. This is where we encourage dialogue between Singaporeans and Malaysians about their respective film industries.
The Malaysian Film Festival in Singapore is organized by DMR Productions. DMR Productions produce CausewayExchange (CEX), an annual arts exchange festival between Singapore and Malaysia that provides a platform for creative industries from both Singapore and Malaysia to share their work, network and explore new possibilities. The festival has been going on for 8 years and has presented over 356 artists across all genres and has attracted an audience of over 38,000.
Saturday, 28th of September, 7pm – Mrs K
Mrs K is a housewife who lives in a quiet suburban neighbourhood with her husband, Mr K and their daughter Lil’ K. One day, a stranger shows up to blackmail Mrs K. He’s an ex-cop who knows about her unseemly past. But he doesn’t seem to pose much threat and she punishes him, hoping that he would back off. That is only a prelude to the immanent terror. Soon, Lil’ K is kidnapped. Mrs K is forced out of her sheltered life to face an old enemy.

Directed by Mamat Khalid, the story follows a group of bikers, who call themselves Rentaz, decide to go on a high-speed cross-country road trip to Betong Siam. However, the group ends up journeying into the underworld of hell instead.

Saturday, 29th of September, 1:30pm – Malaysia and Singapore cinema: Shared Histories & Common Markets?
Malaysia and Singapore have a shared early cinema history. Over the last few years, there have been film production collaborations between the two countries as film funders see a common market emerging. Many mainstream feature films have seen commercial screenings of each other’s films in both countries. Do we judge the success of a film from its box office collection or the international exposure and awards at prestigious film festivals? Can the success of a film contribute to the growth of a film industry?

Madhusoodhanan is a private University Mathematical professor who lives a very simple yet content life with his only daughter, Mythili. She is all he has in life after losing his pregnant wife in a car accident few years ago. Madhusoodhanan has been living in agony not only losing his wife in the accident but has been traumatised by the death of other victims of the accident, a lady with her two year old son. Not only psychologically affected, but financially as well, as he is facing legal suits by the husband of the victim. Living heavily fighting against these odds, a small mistake at work costs him his job. While struggling amply, both mentally and physically to serve a good life to Mythili, his whole life turns upside down when she collapses all of a sudden and is hospitalised. He burns in guilt as the sole reason for the collapse was the impact she endured from the tragic accident.
Having being pushed to the heavy medical expenses to cover the operation and treatment, the story narrates how Madhusoodhanan manages to succeed in the survival of his loving daughter. How his intelligence being utilised without going against his life principles in the course of achieving his goals are the main uniqueness and interesting part of the screenplay. At the same time, it also tells very emotional and soulful family values of an unconditional love of a father towards his most loving daughter which will leave a great impact on the audience.

Sunny (Frederick Lee), a film director, returns to his hometown of Penang to shoot a new film, an autobiographical story about his family, all without his family’s knowledge or approval. It has been years since he was last home, and his family members – especially his older sister Hoon (Yeo Yann Yann), his aunts Grace (Sue Tan) and Vivian (Tan Ai Suan) – and his old schoolmates are excited to see him, thinking that he’s been living a rich and successful life in Kuala Lumpur. But the reality is that Sunny drives a beat-up car, has relationship problems, and is running out of money for his new film.
The reason Sunny is making this film is linked to a shocking incident that he had witnessed as a boy. It has haunted him and caused resentment towards his mother (Neo Swee Lin) and his older, mentally disabled brother, Boy (John Tan).
In trying to tell his family’s story, Sunny is forced to confront and relive the past, taking him back to his childhood and the family that tried their best not to fall apart in the face of adversity. In the end, the filmmaking, for Sunny, becomes a cathartic exercise, inadvertently opening old wounds, exercising anger and guilt, and most of all, showing him that true love is about sacrifice.
